Today, August 15, marked 4 years of Taliban rule in Afghanistan. Since the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021, U.S. engagement has primarily focused on counterterrorism efforts, humanitarian assistance, and securing the release of Americans detained by the Taliban. There have also been attempts to address human rights concerns, particularly the severe restrictions on women and girls, who continue to be denied their fundamental rights. In parallel, the U.S. has maintained targeted economic sanctions against the Taliban regime and specific Taliban leaders.
