Since the fall of Kabul in August 2021, the bilateral relationship between India and Afghanistan has undergone rapid transformation. Prior to the Taliban’s return to power, India had a deep economic and political interest in Afghanistan, providing funding and resources for infrastructural development, humanitarian aid, and soft-power ties. India rightly identified Afghanistan as the gateway into the Central Asian region, as well as an important ally in the endlessly pervasive tension between India and Pakistan. The relations soured in 2021, with India joining the rest of the world in disengaging with the unrecognized Interim Taliban Administration.
